NY/NJ TRIP! Chamber Singers and Treble Choir had a whirlwind month which began with a three day trip to New York and New Jersey. We were lucky enough to see TWO Broadway shows, sing in a workshop with some seasoned Broadway directors and performers, and sing in one of the famous arches during our tour of Princeton University! Our last day was spent at Westminster Choir College, as both groups received feedback from WCC professors at the Westminster Choir College High School Invitational. Our bus driver bravely and carefully drove through (yet another) snowstorm on the way home, and we were all relieved to pull back into WMHS at the end of the trip!!

MICCA SUCCESS! Both Chamber Singers and Treble Choir had outstanding performances at the Massachusetts Instrumental & Choral Conductors Association Festival adjudication again this year. For the second year in a row, both groups received GOLD medals to recognize their performances, and participated in excellent clinics given by Michele Adams and Kayla Werlin. They also received recorded feedback, which will help the students continue to grow as musicians.

CHORAL NIGHT! Mark your calendars for our Annual Choral Night Concert - May 20! This year, our Choral Night will feature over 150 singers from 8th through 12th grade, with performances by the GMS 8th Grade Chorus and all the vocal groups in the WMHS Choral Department! As we look ahead to Term 4, we also start to plan for end of the year performances, such as the in-school WMHS Memorial Day Ceremony and WMHS Graduation.
HONOR CHOIRS! Hailey Allocco, James Brogna, Shaiel Coral, Charlie LaMonica, and Sarah Eller recently represented our department at the Massachusetts All-State Festival. They spent Friday, March 20 in Worcester, rehearsing a challenging and rewarding program, then performed at the beautiful Hanover Theater on Saturday, March 21 The conductors this year were (SSAA) Alysia Lee, Artistic Director of Sister Cities Girl Choir and (SATB) Heather Mitchell, Assistant Director of Choral Activities at The College of New Jersey. Congratulations to our All-State students!! At the end of February, Shaiel Coral and Naya Chankhour both sang in the ACDA Honor Choirs. Shaiel sang in the SSAA Choir with Cindy Ellis and Naya sang in the first ever Contemporary A Cappella Fusion Choir conducted by Rob Dietz. After three days of intensive rehearsals, both groups performed at the beautiful Veterans Auditorium in Providence, RI. And in the middle of the month, we had seven freshmen singing in the Junior District Festival. Jacki Adams, Micaela Olivieri, EJ Savage, and Ryvir Wagner performed with the SATB Chorus, conducted by Minji Kim and Fiona Burd, Abby Gregorovic, and Sophie Powers sang in the SSA Chorus, conducted by Maura Saint.
A Cappella Groups
SEMIFINALS! On March 15, Voices of Steel had an incredible day at University of Hartford performing with the top 10 groups in the Northeast Region at ICHSA Semifinals. This year marks the first time that VOS has performed at semifinals in two consecutive years, which is a major accomplishment for the group and a testament to their very hard work on this year’s competition set! On March 18, Voices of Steel was honored to be the guests at the All-Town 4th Grade Choral Concert, one of their favorite concerts of the year. They are working hard on new songs for their two major events in April, VPAD and Spring A Cappella Night! Also, auditions for next year’s Voices of Steel are scheduled for May 4.

A CAPPELLA NIGHT! Both Mic Drop and Voices of Steel will perform in our Spring A Cappella Night that will feature the headliner Musae, with special guests, GMS Chamber Chorus! Friday, April 10, 7:00 PM!!!
Student Perspective
Please enjoy this note from one of our students, junior Lucy Whalen!!
This past month for the music department has been lots of hard work resulting in great rewards! In the beginning of the month, we traveled to NYC and New Jersey to attend the Westminster Choir College Festival where we saw two broadway shows, and got to gain new information and perspective from choral professionals to improve our musical pieces. Later in the month, Voices of Steel made it to ICHSA semifinals with an incredible performance of their comp set! Also, 5 students from WMHS were accepted into and performed in the MMEA senior district festival, and 6 Freshman students at WMHS were accepted to and had a great performance and experience at MMEA Junior Districts! On a more recent note, Treble Choir and Chamber Singers both received gold medals at MICCA on friday, the 27th! As the month comes to a close, both Acapella groups have been hard at work on new music for Spring A Cappella night on April 10th!
