Choral
THINK SPRING! All our choral groups are hard at work preparing music for our spring Choral Night on May 23rd! Some of the music for the spring concert was chosen by students through our “Song Choice Project” in January. Chorale is working on Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day", a Polynesian folk song, and "I See the Light” from Tangled. Chamber Singers are learning “You Will Be Found,” from Dear Evan Hansen and “Ad Astra” by Jacob Naverud. Treble Choir is working on Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” a piece in both Latin and Sami called “Spes,” May Erlewine's “Never One Thing,” and soon they will be starting Baroque composer Giovanni Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater.” Together, Treble Choir and Chamber Singers are preparing Eric Whitacre’s very challenging “Good Night Moon” and a piece by Pinkzebra, “Fly Away Home.” All the groups will sing a special combined piece with our friends in the 8th Grade Chorus.
TRIP TO ORLANDO! Students from all three ensembles are looking forward to our upcoming trip to the National A Cappella Convention. Students will be able to attend showcase performances by Musae, The Beatbox House, and Spiderhorse, as well as sing in an Honor Choir led by the incomparable “godfather of a cappella,” Deke Sharon. We will be bookending the festival with trips to both the Magic Kingdom and Universal Studios. We’d like to say a huge thank you to the Wakefield Music Boosters for all their help with our trip!
A Cappella
Thank you to all who attended and assisted with hosting the ICHSA Quarterfinal on February 12th. Voices of Steel had an incredible performance, and I am so proud of the work they put in this season. Congratulations to our friends in The Newtones and The Thursdays, who are continuing onto the semifinal round at Mechanics Hall in Worcester!
Voices of Steel will perform three times in March! They will be singing with and for the 4th Grade Chorus on March 21. On March 25, they’ll be part of the High School Showcase at the National A Cappella Convention in Orlando. At the end of the month, they’ll be performing at the second annual Belmont High School A Cappella Night!
Mic Drop is also hard at work prepping for their next performance at our Choral Night Concert in May.
Student Perspective
Please enjoy this note from one of our students, junior Morgan Wallace!!
Hello, I’m Morgan Wallace. I’m a junior, and I’ve been a member of the WMHS Treble Choir since my freshman year and a member of Voices of Steel for almost two years now. In Treble Choir, we are making serious progress on a few of our more difficult pieces and beginning to finetune some of our simpler ones. We are very excited to be pushing ourselves and cannot wait to be ready to perform. Voices of Steel has wrapped up our competition season which means all focus is on the approaching 4th Grade Chorus Concert and, of course, our upcoming trip to Orlando for the National A Cappella Convention in March. We can’t wait to go to improve our performing skills and possibly make friends from all across the country.
