Choral Department Update - September 2018

WELCOME: Welcome to our new students and families! The Wakefield High School Music Department is a special community, and we’re glad you chose to join us! Welcome back to our returning students and families! I’m looking to seeing both new and returning parents at Back to School Night this Thursday, September 20.

Choral Ensembles

GETTING STARTED: Each ensemble has been discussing and implementing our CHOR-AL values: Collaborate, Harness, Open, Ready, Aid, Listen. Students were given the new WHS Choral Handbook as a resource for our Choral Ensembles. This document includes the calendar for the year, so please be sure to put important performance dates on your calendar! Ensembles are working on developing tone, listening to each other, and learning accurate solfege patterns.

A Cappella Groups

In the beginning of September, She Major and Voices of Steel got together at a retreat at Galvin Middle School, to establish goals for the year, get to know each other better, and to begin learning music together. Now it its second year, In Big Treble met in rehearsal for the first time last week. All three groups are looking forward to a great year!

Exciting Notes

  • In November, member of Chamber Singers and She Major, junior Elisabeth Nordeen, will be performing with the National Association for Music Education All-National Mixed Chorus. The rehearsals and concert will take place at the Coronado Springs Resort in Walt Disney World, and the chorus will be conducted by Dr. Amanda Quist. See the press release here! This is a huge honor and we are very proud of Elisabeth!

  • Last week, our students were lucky to observe and take part in a master class given by Broadway’s original Cinderella, Laura Osnes, and her music director, Ben Rauhala. Thank you to the Wakefield Music Boosters for providing the funding to bring these amazing Broadway artists to Wakefield High School!

Stay connected!

This Is Why I Teach Music

Not because I expect you to major in music,

not because I expect you to play or sing all your life,

not so you can relax,

not so you can have fun.

But

So you will be human.

So you will recognize beauty.

So you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world.

So you will have something to cling to.

So you will have more love,

more compassion,

more gentleness,

more good...

In short, more life.

Of what value will it be to make a prosperous living

unless you know how to live?
