WMHS Choral Update - January 2024

Choral Ensembles

HAPPY MID YEAR! Our school year is officially half over and Term 3 has begun! This past month, Chamber Singers and Treble Choir took a break from daily rehearsals and worked on a solo singing project, which culminated in a solo performance for the class. All the choral students got to work on one of their favorite projects of the year - the Song Choice Project, in which they get to choose, present, and vote on repertoire for our Spring Concert. They picked some great pieces and we can’t wait to start learning them! Grades will be posted in PowerSchool on February 6. Students and parents should contact me if they have any questions about grades.

FESTIVAL NEWS: WMHS students had a wonderful experience at this year’s Senior District Festival. Dr. Marcela Molina conducted the chorus in performance at Lexington High School. Students had the opportunity to learn challenging music and sing with new friends. Students who received All-State recommendations auditioned at Shrewsbury HS on January 20. Congratulations to Hailey Allocco, who will sing in the All-State Chorus at Symphony Hall on Saturday, March 23.

A Cappella Groups

Our Winter A Cappella Night will be this Saturday, February 3, at 7:30 PM at the GMS Auditorium. It will feature the debut of Voices of Steel’s 2024 competition set, as well as Mic Drop, the GMS Chamber Chorus, and our friends from North Reading, NOTEorious. The concert is free! (Donations accepted to benefit the Wakefield Music Boosters). On Sunday, February 11, Voices of Steel will compete in the International Championship of High School A Cappella, at the Galvin Middle School!!

Student Perspective Please enjoy this note from one of our students, senior Mario Longo!!

Hi, I'm Mario Longo. I am the Theater president, and Chamber Singers and Voices of Steel member. This month we had our Sr. District performance as well as the All State auditions. We had an amazing end to our elementary school tour and we’re so happy to be able to perform for the kids. VOS has made so much progress with our comp set. The performing arts department has made so much progress this month and I am so excited for a capella night on February 3rd!

Ms. Morel sings at Carnegie Hall!!

Your students may have mentioned that I have been out of school for rehearsals and performances for a few days these past couple weeks. As you may know, I sing with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and this week, my choir had the great honor of performing Dmitri Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtensk at Carnegie Hall with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and many amazing opera singers. I am so lucky to have these opportunities, which enrich my own musical experiences and directly impact my teaching, as I bring many ideas from my rehearsals and performances right back to the students. This was a huge undertaking for the BSO, that included many daytime, evening, and weekend rehearsals, with two performances in Boston in addition to the Carnegie Hall runout. I am grateful for the support of the WPS administration, who grant me the professional development time to participate in the TFC, and the responsibility of my students who will still work hard in class, even when I’m not there to oversee them. Thank you!
