WMHS Choral Update - February 2024

Choral Ensembles

THINK SPRING! All our choral groups are hard at work preparing music for our Spring Choral Night on May 23rd! This year our Choral Night will include all the choristers from 7th-12th grade, which will conclude with about 250 singers singing Gwyneth Walker’s “How Can I Keep from Singing” and The Highwomen’s “Crowded Table.” Some of the music for the spring concert was chosen by students through our “Song Choice Project” in January. Chorale and Chamber Singers are working on Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” and Treble Choir is working on Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.”

FESTIVAL NEWS: Ben Blackstone, Morgan Wallace, and Jacob Williams sang this past weekend in the American Choral Directors’ Association Honor Choirs at the 2024 Eastern Division Conference in Providence, RI. Morgan was part of the SSAA High School Choir, conducted by Dr. A. Jan Taylor and Jacob and Ben were part of the Jr High Choir conducted by Liana Salinas. Their work culminated in a performance for almost 2000 people at the beautiful Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Students in the choirs came from all over the eastern region from Maine to Maryland, and these students represented our school, our town, and our state with pride!!

A Cappella Groups

Voices of Steel had a successful competition season, placing 5th in the most competitive ICHSA Quarterfinal in years. Voices of Steel and Mic Drop had an awesome time at our Winter A Cappella Night, after spending the afternoon in workshops with a cappella pro Mason Van Gieson and NRHS director Alli Kane. Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered at, and supported our a cappella singers in February!!

We’re excited to announce that our Spring A Cappella Night will feature the headliner Chasing Saturn, with WMHS groups, Voices of Steel and Mic Drop, with special guests NOTEorious and the GMS Chamber Chorus! April 9, 2024, 7:00 PM - tickets available now!!

 Student Perspective

Please enjoy this note from one of our students, sophomore McKayla Herzog!!

Hi, my name is McKayla Herzog and I am a sophomore at WMHS. I am the soprano section leader in Chamber Singers, as well as a member of Mic Drop. This month we had lots of exciting things happen in the Music Department! We hosted a cappella night on February 3rd where both WMHS groups performed and it was so much fun! In addition to A Cappella night, VOS went to ICHSA and performed their competition set, placing 5th. In class, we are starting work on our Spring Concert repertoire that we are all excited about. This month was very productive for the music department, and we can’t wait for A Cappella Night on April 9th!
