WMHS Choral Update - April 2024

Choral Ensembles

VPAD SUCCESS! Chamber Singers (pictured), Treble Choir, and Voices of Steel, along with Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, String Ensemble, and the Warrior Marching Band entertained students from K-8 on April 2, at our whirlwind celebration of all facets of our department: Visual and Performing Arts Day. It was a great day, with lots of energy from the students in the audience, and great performances from all the groups.

CHORAL NIGHT! Mark your calendars for our Annual Choral Night Concert - May 23, 2024! This year, our Choral Night will feature 259 singers from 7th through 12th grade, with performances by all the GMS 7th and 8th Grade Choruses and all the vocal groups in the WMHS Choral Department! All singers must attend the mandatory dress rehearsal on May 22, at GMS, from 3:15-5:30. After the concert, we’ll be spending time on Post-Concert Self-Assessments, then we’ll begin working on Final Exam Performances!

ADDITIONAL END OF THE YEAR PERFORMANCES! Both Treble Choir and Chamber Singers will perform at the WMHS in-school Memorial Day Ceremony on May 24, and at the WMHS Class of 2024 Graduation on June 1. We are thrilled to take part in these special ceremonies for our student body.

A Cappella Groups

Voices of Steel kept very busy in April, with lots of performances in and around Wakefield. Our 12th Annual A Cappella Night, with headliners Chasing Saturn, was a huge success, including a workshop (pictured) with all the a cappella singers from 7-12 grade. VOS also performed at VPAD, the North Reading Sing Fling, and Belmont A Cappella Night. Upcoming performances include the Tri-M Charity concert for the Meghan S. Burnett Foundation on Friday, May 17, our annual Choral Night concert on May 23, the Wakefield Pride Month Flag Raising sponsored by the Wakefield Human Rights Committee on June 3, and Brian Agosta’s Comedy Night at the Albion Cultural Exchange on June 13.

In addition, many members of both Voices of Steel and Mic Drop are performing in our second musical of the year, the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! See below for the WHS Theater ticket link. Lastly, we are excited to announce the Theater/A Cappella Banquet at the Crystal Community Club on May 16. Sign up here by May 10!

Student Perspective

Please enjoy this note from one of our students, sophomore Naya Chankhour!!

Hello, I'm Naya, a member of Voices of Steel and our school's Treble Choir. April has been super busy for us, with a lot of practicing and performing at several events. As far as singing groups, the Treble Choir, Chamber Singers, and Voices of Steel performed at VPAD, where we had a blast singing for the middle and elementary schoolers! This April, Voices of Steel and Mic Drop also performed at our school's A Cappella Night, which was a great experience. VOS also performed at Belmont and North Reading’s A Cappella Nights. It was a great experience performing with other towns! In May, we'll be spending a good amount of time fine-tuning our performances for the upcoming Choral Night. Also, our school's musical is happening this May, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, so be sure to check it out! Thank you for reading and I hope to see you all this May at our various upcoming performances!
