WHS Choral Update - October 2023

Choral Ensembles

END OF TERM 1: It’s been a great fall of music making! The term ends on Thursday, November 9. Students should be checking Google Classroom and PowerSchool to make sure all assignments are up to date. Term 1 grades will be published in PowerSchool on Monday, November 20. Unfortunately, we were unable to perform at the NESBA Marching Band show due to the rain cancellation, but Treble Choir & Chamber Singers will perform at our A Cappella Fall Fest! Keep reading for more info!

CONCERT ATTIRE: Now is a great time to start thinking about concert attire! For Chamber Singers, Chorale, and Treble Choir, concert attire is a black dress shirt, black dress pants OR ankle length skirt, black dress shoes, black socks. The following are NOT allowed on stage: t-shirts, polo shirts, black jeans, sneakers, white socks, and bare legs. All groups should have their concert attire ready for the Winter Concert on December 19.

A Cappella Groups

Voices of Steel and Mic Drop are gearing up for the second annual A Cappella Fall Fest, this Saturday, November 4, 7 PM, at the GMS Auditorium. Tickets are $10 at the door, and groups from North Reading, Marblehead, Saugus, and Marlborough will be joining us! It’s going to be a great night of music! The Fall Fest will also provide an opportunity for Treble Choir and Chamber Singers to perform the National Anthem AND a sneak peak at our upcoming fall musical, Disney’s Descendants! Looking forward to the competition season, Voices of Steel recorded and submitted their application video for the Varsity Vocals International Championship of High School A Cappella. Results will be posted in mid-November. Currently, they are working on competition set music and music for December gigs. Students sing holiday and pop songs around the community! Follow them on social media to see where their next performance will be!

Exciting Notes

We were extremely proud to have four students from the WHS Choral Department accepted into the American Choral Directors Association Honor Choirs. These choirs are made up of students from Maine to Maryland who will rehearse and perform at the Eastern Conference in Providence in February 2024. Congratulations to Morgan Wallace (SSAA High School Choir), Mario Long (SATB High School Choir), Ben Blackstone, and Jacob Williams (Junior High Choir).

Our annual Tri-M Induction took place on October 19. We inducted thirteen new members including four students from the Choral Department. (from left) Nadia Collins, Samantha Bordonaro, Ariannah Tringali, Siobhan Lombardi, Jhalak Patel, and Charlotte O’Neil sang the National Anthem at the beginning of the ceremony.

Student Perspective

Please enjoy this note from one of our students!!

Hi, I'm Naya Chankhour, a sophomore at Wakefield High school, and I'm thrilled about the upcoming year. I am the Social Coordinator and a member of Voices of Steel, the librarian and production manager for Treble Choir, a member of the WHS Marching band, and am involved in Theater Arts. Despite the challenges posed by covid to our music program, it's really amazing to witness all of the new members joining us, year after year, contributing to the rebuilding of our community. In Treble Choir, we've been preparing for the district festival we do every year, where each of us will audition individually. Also, in, Treble Choir, Mrs. Morel's selections for our repertoire have been great. To add a creative touch to our chorus room, she's also set up a huge, colorable piece of paper on the wall with a variety of markers, resulting in a colorful and vibrant addition to our space. It has been loads of fun coloring it in and watching everybody bond and have an enjoyable time doing something like this. In anticipation of Halloween, we've decorated the chorus room as well and it looks so good! Over in Voices of Steel, we've already immersed ourselves in learning the comp. set. Also, the Christmas music we’ve been working on has been an absolute blast. This is my first year being a member in VOS and it's been an absolute blast. The year ahead promises an amazing musical journey, and I can't wait to see where it takes us all!
