Whew. What a year. The pandemic years taught us not to have expectations, not to plan, and not to count on anything. In September, we were cautiously optimistic, but entirely unsure of what this year would bring. We were singing in masks with no performance dates on the calendar. Our ensembles hadn’t rehearsed or performed in a normal way since 2019. And yet, our students persevered: they sang through masks, they wiped down microphones, they live-streamed concerts, they dealt with rescheduled rehearsals and performances, they quarantined, they covered for others who were in quarantine, and they gave their very best. They formed truly musical ensembles and lasting friendships. They learned new songs and new concepts and grew as singers and performers. I am so very grateful and proud of the work they have done and the enthusiasm with which they have met every challenge this past year.
Choral Ensembles
CHORAL NIGHT! The WHS Choral Ensembles performed their first Choral Night since May of 2019. They were joined by the 8th Grade Chorus and about 30 alumni from the Classes of 2010 to 2021. It was wonderful to have the auditorium full of concert goers again!
MARCH TRIP TO ORLANDO We are so excited to be able to travel again! We will be attending the National A Cappella Convention in March of 2023. All students in Treble Choir, Chorale, and Chamber Singers are eligible to participate in this trip, which will include a day in Disney and a day in Universal. The deadline to sign up is TODAY, so if you are interested, please email Ms. Morel ASAP! Voices of Steel will be one of the featured groups performing in the a cappella showcase, and all students will have opportunities to both perform and learn. It’s going to be a truly musically enriching and fun experience.
A Cappella Groups
We were thrilled to end our year with many shows! Voices of Steel and Mic Drop both had excellent performances at Choral Night. Voices of Steel was also honored to be guests at the 4th Grade Chorus Concert, and they had the opportunity to sing both for and with the 4th graders. In April, Voices of Steel was invited to perform with groups from Belmont, Natick, and Newton at the brand new Belmont High School Auditorium. In our final event of the year, A Cappella and Theater Arts joined forces for an epic end of the year banquet at Spinelli’s where we laughed, cried, and danced the night away. And, in early June, we held auditions for next year’s group and have already started planning music and performances for next year. Stay tuned!!
