Choral Department Update - September 2019

Choral Ensembles

WELCOME: Welcome to our new students and families! The Wakefield High School Music Department is a special community, and we’re glad you chose to join us! Welcome back to our returning students and families! It was great to see so many new and returning faces at Back to School Night a couple weeks ago.

GETTING STARTED: Each ensemble has been discussing and implementing our CHOR-AL values: Collaborate, Harness, Open, Ready, Aid, Listen. Students were given the WHS Choral Handbook as a resource for our Choral Ensembles. This document includes the calendar for the year, so please be sure to put important performance dates on your calendar! Ensembles are working on developing tone, listening to each other, singing accurate solfege patterns, and learning concert music for December.

A Cappella Groups

In the beginning of September, She Major and Voices of Steel got together at a retreat at Galvin Middle School, to establish goals for the year, get to know each other better, and to begin learning music together. This year, In Big Treble has a new conductor, Mr. Christopher Igoe. They are already off to a great start! All three groups are looking forward to a great year!

Student Perspective

Please enjoy this note from one of our students!!

Hi, my name is Elisabeth Nordeen and I’m the alto section leader and president of Chamber Singers at Wakefield Memorial high school! I’m a senior, and I’m both thrilled and saddened to be going into my fourth and final year as a member of this school’s choral department, but this year is sure to be just as exciting and fun-filled as any other. We started off by welcoming members new and old to all three of our vocal ensembles. We each got to tell each other a little about ourselves and went over certain values that we should always be thinking about such as the ability to collaborate, listen, and be open to new ideas. We even decorated a puzzle with each person’s name on an individual piece in order to visualize how each person brings their own unique skills and personalities in order to create something amazing. Soon after, we settled in and started our collection of new music for the year. This season, Ms. Morel decided to choose pieces almost entirely composed and or arranged by women! Each piece presents its own set of challenges, but we always make sure to keep our #growthmindset in tact and push ourselves past our perceived limits.

Stay connected!
