Choral Department Update - January 2018

January 31, 2018

Choral Ensembles

HAPPY MID YEAR! Our school year is officially half over! We’ve made it through mid-year recording exams, auditions for next year’s ensembles, and we are now well into Term 3. Grades have been posted in iPass. Students and parents should contact Mrs. Morel if they have any questions about grades. Treble Choir and Chamber Singers are preparing for MICCA Adjudication at the end of M

arch, and Chorale is preparing for Choral Night in May.

PERFORMANCES: We enjoyed sharing our message of light and dark with the community in December. Our theme continues through all of our performances this year. The next performance on the calendar is the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductor’s Association Adjudication. This takes place at Westborough High School on Sunday, March 25. Treble Choir performs at 3:20 and Chamber Singers perform at 4:40. Students should reserve the entire day. Our Choral Night is scheduled for May 10th, with a dress rehearsal on May 8th.

DISTRICT FESTIVAL, JR. DISTRICT & ALL-STATE AUDITIONS: WHS students had an amazing experience at this year’s Senior District Festival. Kayla Werlin of Longmeadow High School conducted the chorus. Students had the opportunity to learn challenging music, meet new friends, and even skype with the composer of one of their concert pieces! We were lucky to be able to host the festival at our beautiful Galvin Middle School auditorium. Educators from around the NE District were raving about our space. Dante Santaniello was the only Wakefield High School student to audition for Junior Districts this year, and he was accepted! Students who received All-State recommendations auditioned at Shrewsbury High School, and we had eight students accepted into the All-State Festival ensembles, the most in over 15 years. Congratulations to Gavin Frey, Elisabeth Nordeen, Ava Spies, Ryan Tarpey, and Catherine Tonias, who will sing in the All-State Chorus at Symphony Hall on March 2nd.

A Cappella Groups

Thank you to those of you who attended our 7th Annual A Cappella Night! It was a huge success, and we raised most of the remaining funds to pay for our brand new sound system. A huge thank you to the Wakefield Music Boosters for donating the majority of the funding for the system. In Big Treble made their debut - congrats to them on a great first performance!!

She Major represented Wakefield High School at the high school competition at NE Voices on Friday, January 26th. The following day, students from VOS and She Major attended workshops led by a cappella professionals from all over the country.

Next Saturday, She Major & Voices of Steel will compete in the International Championship of High School A Cappella, at the Galvin Middle School! We are looking for students and parents to volunteer to help out in various ways. Email me if you are interested!
