Choral Department Update - January 2017

Greetings to the parents and guardians of students in WHS Choral Ensembles!

Happy New Year! January has been another exciting and productive month of music making in the WHS Choral Department.

Chorale, Treble Choir, Chamber Singers: Term 3 is in full swing here at Wakefield High School, and that means that all current students completed a Recording exam as part of their Mid Year Exam grade, auditions for next year’s ensembles are underway, and we are planning and learning music for our May concert. Grades will be posted in iPass next week. We had a record 83 students audition for Treble Choir & Chamber Singers for 2017-2018! (To give you some perspective, in 2010, 37 students auditioned). Our May concert will be a Broadway-themed concert, and the students are playing an active role in choosing the repertoire. Make sure it’s on your calendar - Wednesday, May 17th, 7pm, at GMS!

She Major & Voices of Steel: Our a cappella competition season is underway! TONIGHT at 7pm: She Major performs with the Saugus Sachimes at Saugus High School! On Sunday, January 29th, Wakefield A Cappella students will be coached by a cappella professionals from around the region, then perform starting at 5pm at the Galvin Middle School. See both concert posters below. On February 11, She Major & Voices of Steel will compete with groups from all over New England in the quarterfinal round of the International Championship of High School A Cappella. We are also hosting this event, so we need lots of parent and student volunteers that day to help out! Along with the Warrior Marching Band, She Major & Voices of Steel will be traveling to Disney over February break to perform! @shemajorwhs | She Major FB | @voicesofsteel | Voices of Steel FB

District Festival: On Saturday, January 28th, freshmen from Wakefield High School and 7th and 8th graders from Galvin Middle School will audition for Junior District ensembles. (The bus leaves at 1:30pm from GMS). Best of luck to them! On January 14th, students participated in an extremely successful Senior District Concert at our new venue, UMass Lowell.

All-State Auditions: Congratulations to tenor Samuele Bianchet-David and alto Emily Cierpial on their acceptance into the Massachusetts All-State Mixed Chorus! They will be performing with about 240 choral singers from around the state at Symphony Hall on March 11th.

Stay Connected! Check out our website for more information on performance dates, and follow the WHS Choral Department on Facebook and Twitter for quick updates.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
